The 7s returned to winning ways despite missing several key players. Tom Norman led the front line energetically and creatively, scoring the first from a short corner strike on 13 minutes and making a big contribution to the second mid way through the second period. Kris returned to control midfield (with Zach deputising impressively whenever he needed a rest). With a little more time and space than we have had in recent games, when we stuck to our disciplines we played some outstanding team hockey, mixing short and long balls and timing and weighting our passes well. Tom Q and Aaron had good opportunities and several balls ran agonisingly across the goalmouth, but that calming second goal eluded us. Between the disciplined phases we had long periods pinned in our own 25 and managed to concede 12 short corners. If Ricki's short corner routine had been a bit sharper this might have been a different game! However, we kept plenty of players behind the ball this week and our stubborn backs gave them few other opportunities. We are grateful to our guest Zak Thompson in goal for some sharp reflexes when we did let them get away. The second goal was a pearl. Zach picked a dangerous ball out of the air down by our right side corner flag, fed Lewis up the line, who in turn got an early ball up to Tom Norman. An exchange of passes with Kris put Tom free into the D, the keeper got to the shot but Anthony was there to see the ball over the line. 90 meters, fifteen seconds and less than a dozen touches.
In the final quarter we were playing consistently well and making great use of width, especially down the left where Jo, Geoff H and Tom wove through the Ricki defence time after time, but the third goal wouldn't come. Man of the match goes to Tom Norman.
