A trip to Southgate Hockey club and a good result against their Tankards side. The Tankards can be a difficult side to break down often made up of more senior players with a lot of experience, yesterday they had some good younger players as well.
From the off we matched them in both experience and youth, our defensive line up of Graham, Jon and Tony was one of the most experienced we can turn out in the 6/7s, combine that with a midfield of Geoff (for once only required to concentrate on his game rather than organising team and subs) Daryl, Chris, Simon and Sean giving both experience and youth to the midfield with Ian and James leading the line up front, and you have a team ranging in terms of individual years playing from 1 to well over 55 and an age range from 14 to over 70, and that’s what makes this a great side to play in. None of the competitiveness is lost in fact some of the more senior members are the most competitive.
From the onset Ian’s pace was to much for the Southgate defence and soon resulted in him scoring the first goal. Sean scored the second following some great work and being in exactly the right place when the opportunity arose. James put away the third after a super run supporting Ian and slotting the cross away nicely, and made it 2 following a similar move in the second half. As we started to tire later in the second half we came under a bit more pressure and conceded a couple of short corners one of which Southgate scored a goal from.
Difficult to select a man of the match as there were good performances all round and a great team effort, but I will mention Simon,Sean and James who all had excellent games with Sean and James scoring their first goals at adult level.
