Yes, we've done it, we've finished a league campaign with a positive goal difference. Played 20, won 8, drawn 3, lost 9, scored 36, conceded 35! A big thank you to the 8 goalkeepers we fielded this season. Only 4 of the 'result' games were decided by more than one goal, our worst defeat was 3 - 1.
A well balanced mid-table battle against Letchworth veterans gradually swung in our favour as our fitness showed through and we improved our passing. In the first half neither side looked terribly threatening from open play, in blustery conditions and on a sluggish pitch. Both sides forced a few shorts, and Daryl and Andy drew good saves from their keeper. Lanky, guesting for us in goal, dealt tidily with the couple of shots they managed.
After the break we cut out some of the sloppier passes, and began to use more of the pitch, Richard impressing down the left. Peter Trendler, trying out life at the front of the diamond, began to find the right spaces and we were able to build some sustained pressure, though again the goal looked elusive as the Lechworth keeper blocked us again and again. Ian broke the deadlock with an hour gone, dribbling down to the left bi-line and striking home from an impossibly fine angle.
We kept deep in defence and marked pretty well, but above all we always had numbers back, and Andy (man of the match) broke up most of Letchworth's trademark down-the-middle attacking play and moved us rapidly into counter attack. Sadly the rest of the distribution to from the back was decidedly patchy.
Well done everyone - there will be an end of season review shortly. Just the friendly next week down at Old Loughts to give us an appetite for a curry in the evening.
