Going into the game on Saturday, the ladies’ 3s stood optimistic. With a strong team (albeit only 11) against opposition we had beaten the previous season, we went into the game with high hopes.
The game started off slightly slower that we would have hoped when we began with 10 due to issues with traffic. The first half saw end to end hockey, tiring the squad and leaving little breathing room. There was some skilful defending and strong attacks from Hertford, including some fantastic saves made by keeper Izzie, and the tired side almost held out until halftime when in a blown-whistle short corner to Harpenden, a goal from a congested back-post trickled in. 1-0 Harpenden.
Half time energy was low but spirits still high! Getting time to settle and regroup, we went into the second half keen to get started. The second half started well, Harpenden seeming slower on the press and the determined Hertford side made sure to take advantage. Some incredibly skilful work up the wing and into the D by Ruby B led to a back-post goal by Kirsty. 1-1.
A dominant show by Hertford in the second half meant most of the play was kept within the Harpenden end. Some solid defending when needed, Hertford kept pushing on to get that win. Deep into the second half, with some great work around the D, Clare sent the ball to Helen on one post, who, switching past the keeper, sent it Abi on the other post, and the ball was sent into the goal without hesitation. 2-1 Hertford!
Hertford continued strong, and were still attacking deep into the game. Final whistle 2-1 Hertford! A great showing by an exciting team. Lots to look forward to into the season!
