The 4th November saw the 5's return to fortress Queenswood with debutant Matthew Norman in goal having celebrated his 13th birthday earlier in the week. Ready to bounce back from a tough to accept loss away at Bengal Tigers, the 5's were eager to beat Saffron Walden!
At the back Lee, Tony, Shaun and Chris made some lovely tackles to keep Saffron Walden out of the our D and the midfield began to dominate. On twenty minutes the match exploded into life due to a quick-fire 2 minute hat trick from Darren Norman which put the reds 3-0 up. Playing some lovely hockey, Hertford put together a couple of lovely one-twos through the middle which led to Darren getting his fourth goal before half-time.
In a buyant half time team talk, Hertford’s captain's instructions were to keep playing the same way. Hertford didn’t. They toiled and struggled in a scrappy 2nd half until eventually scoring twice more through Josh (1st open play goal in 2 years, talk about a set piece specialist) and Jasper.
In an otherwise forgettable second half there was time for Darren to play his way out his man of the match award as he ran through on an open goal whilst Saffron Waldens young goalkeeper adjusted his pads behind the goal only to shoot wide of the empty net and claim an unlikely pass. Man of the match therefore awarded to his son Matthew for a clean sheet on debut.
