The men's 5s started the 23/24 season with a bye, meaning our first run out typically came against our own 6s, with the 5s looking to even things out a bit.
Both teams were strong on paper and the standard of hockey was superb, highlighting exactly why both teams gained promotion last season.
The 5s enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first half but left their shooting boots at home, missing 5 or 6 clear cut goal scoring opportunities. The 6s were ruthless and tenacious on the counter attack, and deservedly went into half time on top thanks to a lovely goal from Aaron White (3 goals in 2 games from last season's 7s hero).
Half time brought about a slight tactical shuffle from the 5s, and we came out all guns blazing. The next 35 minutes was a more one sided affair, with the 5s camped in their attacking half, moving the ball around exceptionally well as well as pressing the 6s back line constantly. The goals came in relatively quick concession - Dan slotting home from short range following a deflection from a Jasper shot - Dan doubling his tally following a neat slip from Josh to the far post in a short corner routine that was effective throughout - Ben grabbing his first of the season from another Jasper assist - and Darren finally finding the back of the net with a lovely top corner finish.
A fantastic team display, particularly in the second half, and a promising start to our div 6 campaign!
