So, a well deserved 2:1 win in our first friendly
Stand out performances from man of the match Finn Kennedy in goal, saving a penalty flick, stopping a screamer to the top right from the top D & numerous saves that kept Hertford in the lead.
I should also mention Lanky who had a superb game as centre back - almost casually walking it out of defense amidst huge pressure.
As the development squad, it is important we encourage & congratulate good hockey - the enthusiasm and hard work alone was good to see, however, in addition it was great to see everyone looking comfortable on the ball, good passing; only a few examples of running into trouble. The passing & running off the ball was excellent & led to both our goals - well done everyone.
So, what happened in the match?
We went down a goal after just a few minutes; a scramble to clear & West Herts pounced.
However, the V's started to take control with the 4:3:3 formation & after some great work down the right a great pass across the D for Steve to score (OK it luckily crept through the keepers legs) (apols in my excitement I've no idea who got the assist) .... Hertford's second goal came in a similar fashion; another move down the right & Archie squared it for his Dad to score (again between the keepers legs). Finn kept us ahead with that penalty flick save.
The second half was tougher - West Herts put on a few good players & we had to hold on - still there were a number of breaks away where Hertford came close to wrapping up the game.
Great game one & all - the momentum is starting, keep passing like that & we'll have a great season
We'll be welcoming back a few of our core V's squad next week - looking forward to it - thanks to those from the IVs & Finn today
