A win to end the league season, and a top half finish....

It was great to sign off with a win, giving us three wins and a draw from our clashes with old rivals Stevenage. The game was something of a microcosm of the season, a mixture of good hard work, some good passages of neat flowing hockey, spells of chaos and panic when we could hardly get the ball out of our own 23, and problems converting pressure into goals (though again we were up against a very handy keeper).

Really we should have won comfortably, but in the end needed several brave saves from Geoff to keep our noses ahead. The goal, on 20 minutes, was a gem. Dave struck to the right hand post from the head of the D, the keeper just got a toe to it, Chris Duncan was right on the spot to sweep in the loose ball. Tor made our other best chance, finding space out left and playing an early long angled cross behind the defence which three of us somehow managed to miss with only the keeper to beat. With Stevenage tiring at the end we finished well in control and turned in some textbook hockey, passing freely and confidently right round the field. Let's start our next league campaign the way we finished.

Though there are a couple of rearranged games to go for other clubs, we will finish the league in 6th place, our third top half finish and only a couple of points short of matching last season's best effort of 4th. Played 20, won 7. drawn 4, lost 9. I'll let you have a broader review of the season after next week's game, and indeed a review of the brief but rich and varied life of Hertford 5s since they started out in 2011. I'm sure our next incarnation as Hertford 6s will be just as good.
