Vice Captain Takes Charge

So with our captain absent this week I (Becks) was in charge. Unfortunately I let our captain down by losing the toss - well technically I didn't lose the toss as the opposition called heads and it was heads. But going on previous weeks, if we don't win the toss, we win the match! I was so confident......... Then I chose a terrible pack of sweets for half time. I think they were harder than the Reversy Percy's we had last week! I did wonder how many teeth might be lost to those Maynards Sports Mixture!

As to the hockey, we had a great 15 minutes at the start of the match and then again at the end, but not so good in between! We took the lead after around 10 minutes on the break. I (Becks) cleared the ball from defence to Mary, except that it was nowhere near Mary! Luckily it was a perfect pass to Leah Wilkerson who shrugged off her marker and beat the keeper with a smashing strike at goal. The goalie stood no chance!

Shortly after that we nearly doubled our lead. Leah again on the break but her shot was just an inch wide of the post. If that had gone in who knows what would have happened! As it was, after that Leighton Buzzard scored 2 goals so we went into half time 2-1 down thinking that we could beat them! But this didn't materialise and we unfortunately let in another 4 goals in the second half.

It was very pleasing to see that we didn't give up until the final whistle and fought for every ball. In the last 10 minutes we laid siege to the Leighton Buzzard goal, but the ball just wouldn't go into the net.

At the end of the game our opposition celebrated promotion with a bottle of Champagne (A bit OTT!), whilst we couldn't wait to get back for teas cooked by the lovely Vanessa. It was a treat - Sausage, beans & chips yum yum.

Thanks to the Ladies 3s players for helping out this week, I think they enjoyed themselves despite getting tonked! Katie Ward, Jo Ross and Maja in goal. Congratulations to Jo Ross and Laura Sharman for jointly winning player of the match.
