Hertford Vets made the long trip up the A1 on Saturday to face an unknown quantity in St.Neots in the National Shield.
On a warm, dry but very windy day the first half in general was controlled by Hertford, although St.Neots were dangerous on the break. Despite getting in good positions, Hertford failed to make good use of the final ball and fell behind to a soft goal 10 minutes from the break that just crept over the line. Hertford did recover and a Gavin Elliot strike from a short corner on half time, leveled the game.
Right at the beginning of the second half, St.Neots re-established their lead with what turned out to be their only shot on goal in the half. Hertford dominated postion and created plenty of opportunities both from open play and short corners with the St Neots keeper and defenders making some vital interventions. Finally with 6 minutes to go Richard Rawlinson converted from close range which took the game straight to penalty strokes.
St Neots were very clinical converted their first four and sending them through to the next round against Stevenage.
