Hertford VI 3 - 0 Southgate Tankards Z

The Men's 6s ended their season on a positive note, with their 8th league win, their biggest in more than 2 years, and a good all round performance played in tremendous spirit.

We were relegated to the sand pitch at Trent Park, which is actually a little less 'bobbly' than the water pitch, and we've never lost there. Tankards fielded a veteran side who allowed us a bit of time and space which for once we used well, regularly threading the ball through their midfield and moving well up the wings. Passing was brisker and more precise than of late, and we won a good proportion of the 50:50 balls.

It wasn't a pushover. Southgate dominated the short corner count and we had to defend hard, drifting well and keeping good shape as they pressed up the pitch, but getting the ball away cleanly and safely to the strikers when we got the ball off them. Andy had a couple of sharp saves to make at the start of each half but ended with a well deserved clean sheet. John produced the champagne moment with an insouciant jab to dispossess their centre forward the one time he got behind us. A really good allround effort upfront and in midfield, Ewan the standout driving up the right. Our control and precision right up to and into their D was a revelation

Dave Harding put us ahead, picking up a rebound after a long period pressing in their D, and 1 - 0 was fair at half time. We made and missed a couple of lovely chances from balls across the goal, and watched a couple of Sothgate efforts whizz past the post. Ian put the second away around the 45 minute mark,catching Daryl's cross on the far post. We stayed more or less in control after that, with time for one final highlight as Graham Locker came up for a short corner on thestroke of time and scored his first goal for the 6s with our last hit of the season!
