Another day, another development team…this time with less of the stick skills than the Southgate side had last week, but noticeably older and faster, and managed by a couple of very good veterans in midfield (though nothing like as veteran as most of us are) . They closed us down quickly and moved the ball around very smartly themselves, and despite a good work rate and some disciplined defence, the 50:50 balls went against us, and we lacked the precision and speed in our passing game to build up any real pressure. Subs rota worked fairly well but the regular rolling didn’t help our momentum and it was noticeable that we conceded the first goal straight after a mass switch around. Given the balance of time played in our D to that played in theirs, we can take 2 – 0 as a pretty good result. Certainly much more satisfying than last week’s defeat. Andy Smith gets man of the match for several smart saves and good command of the D, special thanks to Dave, Tom and Andy slugging it out against the odds in the middle of the pitch against their vets, but overall it was a day of good hard work for everyone but few opportunities for anyone to shine.
