Cambridge South V 3 - 1 Hertford VI
By Geoff Oates
A sluggish return from the festive season
A definite case of post Christmas pudding malaise as we put up a rather lethargic and scrappy display on our first visit to Cambridge South. Both sides had a ringer or two, with Jon and Aodhan Green and Nick Earnshaw helping us out. Cormac Green also joined us for a second outing.
Defence took a while to adjust to the pace and mobility of their opponents and we were soon 2 down. Things got better as the game went on, but Nick Izzard was constantly kept busy and we lost count of the number of saves he made. Our best opportunities came from long balls and counter attacks, mostly focussed on Daryl, who pulled one back before half time with a fine solo effort.
They caught us cold again just after the break, but from then on the game was fairly even, and certainly exciting, if a little disjointed. We made some neat moves down both flanks and got some good crosses in but never managed to get on the end of them, so the best opportunities continued to come from long balls down the middle. We came close several times, but couldn’t make any impact on the scoreboard. Daryl just pips Nick Izzard for MotM, another very promising show from Cormac and some vital last ditch tackles from John at the back were the highlights.
We will need to sharpen up a bit next week.
