Their ringer was better than ours…though Tom Smith gave a great performance at the front of the diamond. We used the friendly to give Clive some time in goal (and to give Andy and DPJ some overdue time in the outfield).
So a rather rearranged side, not helped by the early loss to injury of Jon Durbin, blew hot and cold through the 70 minutes, sometimes putting together long phases of very good creative hockey, but then losing the plot and going back to the usual bad habits. Our other guest, Alex Archer, in only his third senior game, made the most of the limited supply we got through to him; and Graham White held the midfield together impressively. Defence was mostly very solid against a lively attack who often left three upfield and definitely had the legs on our back four, but as last week they had a good short corner routine and one conversion in each half gave them control of the game. 3 – 0 felt a bit harsh for a game where we matched them for long periods, but to be fair we rarely troubled their keeper, whilst Clive got plenty of good action in!
A good afternoon in spite of the result – but we need to find some consistency.
