St Ives V 3 - 2 Hertford VI
Our longest away venture so far, we were greeted at the St Ives’s clubhouse with ‘hello, are you Hereford?’ but even from Herford it was a long drive in gloomy drizzle, for a very soggy game that was actually great fun apart from a 10 minute aberration just before half time when we lost all our defensive shape and leaked 3 goals. Up to then we had looked slightly the better side, working particularly well down the right through Aiden and Nick. Chris got closest to giving us the lead with a hammer of a shot from the back of the D going millimeters wide.
After an inspirational half time talk from John Andrews we pulled our socks up and fought back. John Green pulled one back after a lengthy goal mouth scramble, Nick swept home to make in 3-2 and the closing minutes saw breathless end to end hockey as we pushed in vain for the equalizer. Their keeper was comfortably their man of the match.
Four father / son combinations on the field for the first time with Jon Green joining us again! In fact Green to Green was the most common passing move but we all worked the ball around fairly well and continue to grow in confidence together.
The traditions of social hockey are alive and well – and the 6s continue their long established tradition of losing all their friendlies, 6 out of 6 so far. No wonder people are always happy to play us!
