U14 Lionesses win At Wimbledon Stormers

The U14 Lionesses played their first game since their Semi-final defeat to Surbiton with a return to supra-league action and a long trip to Wimbledon in South West London.

The team was nearly at full strength, with just Cara Nolan missing who unfortunately broke her finger the previous day playing for the Ladies, we all wish her a full and speedy recovery. This was a key game for a qualification for finals day with both teams having 100% records to date

The Lionesses started the game well controlling the ball and turning over possession high in the Wimbledon half and the pressure finally told when Olivia Holme slotted home from a penalty corner at the second attempt. Hertford continued to create the better chances with Florrie Pidduck, Sabrina Quinlivan, Lois Quinn and Ruby Milburn all coming closing, with the Wimbledon keeper making some decent saves – but Wimbledon where dangerous on the break with Georgie Marsden making some key inceptions. The Lionesses doubled their lead just before the break with a fine run from Cate Alywin ending with her finishing between the keeper and the post to give Hertford a 2-0 half time advantage.

The second half was much more end to end with the game opening up as Wimbledon up their game and looked for a route back into the game – but the Lionesses back 3 of Anya Woodgate, Scarlett Blakeney-Edwards and Emily McKenna held firm with Georgie Marsden making some decent stops and Olivia Holme clearing off the line. On the break Hertford were also dangerous and create changes through Sabrina, Ruby, Sienna and Harrie causing the home defence problems.

As the second half draw on Hertford safely saw the game out and continued with their unbeaten run in the competition

Next week the girls on are on the road again with a Trip to Amersham & Chalfont and Cambridge City at home to follow after Easter
