Wearing their new away kit, the Ladies 1s arrived at WGC, only too aware of the importance of the match between the bottom two sides of Division 2SW. A win would move them within 4 points of their opposition, with two games in hand.
Hertford started the stronger side, and some great link up play between Liz Berry and Lucy Whitamore saw WGCs defence tested in the opening minutes. Hertford continued to attack, and great build up play from Baz Wilkins, Mel Evans and Molly Hobson allowed Leah Wilkerson to score with a reverse scoop from a rebounded shot, after only ten minutes.
Buoyed by the goal, Hertford went in search of a second, and forced a couple of short corners - Basil Wilkins was denied by the keeper from a straight strike, leaving them 1-0 up at half time.
WGC, rattled by Hertford's lead, came out hard in the second half and tested Hertford's back line and despite stalwart defending by Nicola Estherby and Teresa Bartram, managed to scramble an equaliser over the line to make it 1-1.
The game then became an end to end battle, both teams desperate to secure the win.
The break finally came from a counterattack - the ball was release out of defence to Liz Berry, who dealt a perfectly weighted pass to give Molly Hobson a one on one with the keeper. Not one to crack under the pressure, Molly rounded the goalie and finished reverse stick into the top corner of the net. The moment of the match.
WGC tried their best for the next twenty minutes to steal an equaliser, but both Laura Sharman and Hannah Brown remained calm and held them out wide, and some superb goalkeeping from Lianne Warnell denied them a chance from a last minute short corner.
A superb team effort to secure the ladies their first league win of the season.
