Hertford Ladies 1s beat Welwyn 1s at home on Saturday in a thrilling end-to-end match.
The game started fairly one sided with Hertford dominating the opening minutes. A brilliant drive and smash into the D from Georgia Simpson-Jinks allowed Molly Hobson to open the scoring for Hertford with a flick into the top right of the net.
Shortly after, play moved down the other side of the pitch successfully with Emily Rollins crossing to Emily Butler who dinked the ball over the keeper’s head to make it 2-0.
Hertford were keen to continue the momentum and Hobson again struck the backboard for a 3rd goal.
However Welwyn did not give up and, just before the half time whistle, punished a mistaken Hertford free hit, making a lucky break to net their 1st.
After half time, Welwyn did continue to fight back, piling the pressure onto the Hertford defence and netting again. This forced Hertford into some risky moves to try and stop the momentum. A very creative aerial from Basil Wilkins was the highlight of this, sending the thrilled crowds into gasps of panic. However this was swiftly recovered by Laura Sharman who drove the ball out of trouble.
Once Hertford re-found their focus and regained composure, they were unstoppable, gaining several consecutive short corners only narrowly denied by some excellent keeping. Persistence paid off however and a great dummy distraction from Hobson allowed Molly Pallett to add to her tally for the season with a beautiful pick up off a right slip to finish the match 4-2.
Hertford Super-subber Pete Hobson said “I’ll be revising my left and right this week as this is a key opportunity for the team to sub more efficiently – has anyone got a sharpie for my hands?”
