Hertford ladies 1's vs St Albans 3's

Despite desperate attempts to return to their winning ways Hertford suffered an unfortunate 5-2 defeat in a rescheduled home fixture against St Albans 3's on Saturday. With half the 1's squad away on holiday and the only sub Hertford had getting taken off to hospital for stitches in the first half (defender Catryn Langley) Hertford had no choice but to struggle on.

St. Albans took the lead by two goals in the first half; the second an unfortunate penalty flick which Veoden just got a glove to but which spun in with the force into the back of the net. The score was hardly reflective of the play though and Hertford had at least half the possession in the first half with some dangerous attacks and a couple of one of ones with the keeper.

Hertford definitely started the stronger team in the second half and a goal for Hertford came after a superb cross from Helen Owen into the D for midfielder Molly Pallett to touch into the back of the net. However, a very unfortunate 5 minute meltdown from Hertford saw st Albans claim 3 soft goals and it was a disappointing 5-1 with only a few minutes to spare. Hertford refused to give up though and were desperate to try and make the score at least reflect the standard of play. A through ball from Pallett to forward Leah Wilkerson on the left wing saw a short run before a fantastic cross to Owen on the right of the D. Everyone was expecting a typical Owen cross to the penalty spot but with a beautiful undercut from the edge of the D and a ridiculously tight angle Owen scored the goal of the season when it looped over the keepers head and tucked under the crossbar into the top left hand corner of the goal. It might have been another loss for Hertford but it almost felt like a victory from Owens goal and captain Pallett had nothing negative to say to the team who fought like troopers for the entire game. Man of the match was split between Pallett and Owen but the whole team deserve a mention for their performance.
