As high flying Welwyn are held

Hertford ladies 1’s hosted Welwyn Garden City at home on Saturday and having lost to them 3-0 at the start of the season. Hertford were lethargic initially and in the first 10 minutes had to defend a series of attacks from the hungry opposition.
However, approximately 10 minutes into the game Hertford came to life and the playing field became level. Well drilled WGC had their set play broken down by the Hertford midfield and began to get frustrated on the ball making simple mistakes which Hertford capitalised on.

The Hertford defence of Tina Hills, Hannah Brown, Lotte Butler, Teresa Bartrum, Claire Rollins and Nicky Estherby were ruthless in their role, taking advantage of the early 16’s to clear the ball out wide and give Hertford the opportunity to attack. The game was relatively even for the remainder of the first half and despite a number of WGC short corners and a few chances for Hertford the score line remained 0-0.

Hertford knew WGC would come out strong in the second half but were prepared for it and remained focused. There was some excellent play from both teams and chances at both ends, in particular a long run of short corners for WGC which they failed to convert. The WGC goal came approximately 15 minutes in from a pacey attack which caught Hertford unawares.

If anything though, this only made Hertford more determined to fight back. A series of attacks from Hertford put further pressure on WGC and Hertford made a wave of attacks which eventually won them a short corner. It was the second short corner which levelled the score line with a fantastic lifted strike from centre forward Sian Foster which sailed into the back board. With everything to play for in the final 10 minutes both teams battled relentlessly for a win but at the final whistle it remained 1-1. Hertford again played fantastically as a team with special mention to man of the match Molly Pallett who was delighted with her teams performance.
