As they beat bottom side Southend on a Frosty Saturday

Hertford ladies 1's played home this weekend on cold and frosty afternoon to bottom of the league Southend. Hertford had beaten Southend confidently 3-0 away earlier in the season and were buzzing for a repeat performance of the champagne hockey played the previous week despite being four 1's players down.

Southend had 1st push back but quickly turned over possession to Hertford who were straight on the attack. There was dozens of chances for Hertford in the first half but they continued to take the play through the top of the D instead of working the ball from the baseline and therefore didn't convert any of the chances to goals. Southend had a couple of attacks using their strongest players in the midfield but hardly managed to get past the 25 yard line before it was cleared by the Hertford defence.

The second half was similar in play; Hertford had the majority of the possession but were a bit slow on reaching 50/50 balls and again struggled to score. During the second half play was stopped by the umpire after the Southend keeper took a tumble in the goal and an assessment was made whether or not the pitch was safe to continue playing on. The goal line had not de-frosted during the day and was becoming difficult to play on; however the umpire deemed it fit to continue and Southend, still drawing at this point, were keen to play on. The Hertford goal came very shortly afterwards; a cross from Sian foster across the D was slotted home by Katy Brown on the right post giving Hertford the lead they had been desperately trying for.

The game was far from over still and with just 1 minute to play Southend were given 3 consecutive short corners; however they were comfortably defended by Hertford and keeper Tina Hills had her one and only touch of the ball for the entire game which she cleared with vigour. The final whistle was a welcoming sound for Hertford who, despite being happy with a win, made the game far harder than it should have been. Man of the match was split this week between goal scorer Katy Brown and midfield Maddy Twyning who both worked fantastically attacking and defending in midfield.
