Hertford started the day mid-table, one point above St. Albans, hoping to bounce back from a disappointing last minute equaliser at home against Broxbourne from the previous week. A strong lineup saw Marcus Stirling and Matt Earle return to the squad and another appearance from Hugo Maclean.
A powerful start from the stags saw them take an early lead courtesy of some fantastic build up play on the wings. Ben Tootell and Andy Durbin linked up to provide a delicately placed ball to James Begg who finished convincingly with a reverse stick shot. Minutes later another “Barcelona tiki-taka” passing move resulted in Finn Kennedy slotting into the bottom corner. The score accurately reflected Hertford’s dominance in the opening quarter, however a slip in discipline at the back allowed Albans to grab one back.
In a tense and tightly fought last 15 in the half, Hertford allowed chances to go begging and a ball crashed across the reds D, was cruelly deflected in at the back post meaning Hertford went in at the break on even terms.
Again Hertford started the second half strongly, however they allowed the Tangerines to take the lead for the first time in the game, after a very questionable decision resulted in a short corner which was then converted. After strong protests the game got back underway however it was evident the Stags were riled and could smell blood. With 5 minutes remaining Hertford won a short corner and James Begg finished with a second reverse stick to grab his 2nd brace of the season.
After a feisty last few minutes, the game ended as a 3-3 draw.
