Hertford bounce back from defeat with a hard earned point against Stevenage thanks to a hat-trick from James Harris and heroics from Tom Smith

Just as Hertford began to get over their first defeat in nearly 3 months, it was time to get prepared for their next summer league game against Stevenage. Having conceded 1st place to Bishop's Stortford in the previous week Hertford had to pull together to try and grab another 3 points and remain level at the top of the league. As Hertford turned up for their evening game they had the pleasure of watching Stortford thrash Cheshunt 12-0 and gain an 18 goal advantage over them and move 2 points ahead before Hertford's game began.

The game began in much the same way that it did in the 1st game between these 2 sides back in April. Hertford began with a noticeable lack of composure and soon saw themselves 1-0 and were reminded of how organised and clinical Stevenage could be on their day. The first half continued in much the same manor and at half-time Hertford found themselves 3-1 behind, James Harris grabbing the goal in what has been the story of their season so far. Despite this, little faith was lost in the team and they began the half strongly and managed to grab a few goals back through James Harris and coach Nick Downer with no reply from Stevenage. The pressure however could not be retained in Hertford's favour as Stevenage grabbed 2 more goals to make it 5-3 with only a fraction of the game left to play.

With the clock running down, Doug Ashworth pulled one back and with minutes remaining James Harris grabbed to complete his hat-trick and level the scoring with minutes remaining. However, as all hockey players will be aware, only seconds are needed in a tense game for a goal to be scored and defeat to be felt... And so, with seconds on the clock, Stevenage began their final push for a winner and as they drove into the D Tom Smith had to make 2 superb saves before saving the best till last. A shot clipped off of his foot and while in the air caught a Stevenage stick and looped above Tom but thanks to his superb reactions he managed to bat it away with his stick and save Hertfords blushes.
