Hertford’s unbeaten start to the season came to a disappointing end losing 3-2 to joint league leaders Luton Town. Having twice led in the match, Hertford’s poor discipline proved costly with the away side taking full advantage of these errors.
After a delayed start, Hertford raced out of the blocks scoring from a short corner within the first 5 minutes following good work down the right from Alec Short. Nick Downer scored with a straight strike which was deflected up into the net from Luton’s number 1 runner.
Luton were unfazed by going a goal down and soon showed they were in excellent form often breaking and attacking with pace. A poor tackle gifted Luton a short corner and a drag flick was deflected into the net via a Hertford stick to make it 1-1.
Hertford hit back almost immediately to lead 2-1 going into half time. A driving run through the heart of the defence by Stan Power set up Ben Cooper who finished tidily over the diving keeper.
Luton re-grouped at half time and were the better side for the remainder of the game with Hertford rarely threatening. Aided by a poor mistake in which possession was given away needlessly, Luton scored a scrappy second goal after Hertford failed to clear the ball twice.
With Hertford already down to 10 men and under increasing pressure, a careless tackle gave Luton a cheap short corner. Luton capitalised with a finish in the top corner to make the final score 3-2.
Hertford will be looking to bounce back quickly facing Potters Bar next week who were relegated with the Stags last year from Division 2S.
