In their 1st league match of the season, a spirited display from a youthful Hertford side ensured the points were shared with Berkhamsted. A much changed line up from the team relegated from Division 2S, Hertford gave full debuts to 4 players and had 4 U18s in the starting 11 – an output of the clubs successful youth set up. Hertford controlled the 1st half, keeping possession nicely and counter attacked with pace when the opportunities occurred. Hertford took the lead through Finn Kennedy with a typical poacher’s goal and this was followed up with a 2nd soon after from captain Alec Short to ensure the away side led 2-0 at the interval. Both goals were made by Ian Dunnett who received a bloody nose for his troubles when creating the 2nd. The match was a tale of 2 halves and sloppy play from Hertford allowed Berkhamsted back into the game. Berkhamsted capitalised on 2 mistakes with the home side drawing level. Lifted by this comeback Berkhamsted took advantage of a contentious short corner to make the game 3-2 and were favourites to seal all 3 points with less than 10 minutes to play. Hertford didn’t allow their heads to drop and showed great tenacity to draw level with Finn Kennedy grabbing a 2nd and making the match 3-3. A solid and committed start by the Stags who look forward to building on this performance in the next fixture with a home match against Stevenage.
