As decisions and ill-discipline go against Hertford

Earlier in the season Hertford ended Blueharts run of 5 successive wins, but suffered a reverse of that result on Saturday losing 5-2 in Hitchin.

Confidence was high in the squad with a mostly unchanged team to their recent 7-1 win over Letchworth. Hertford attackers soon discovered that they could outrun their markers, reducing a passing game to a foot race, but without an end result the honour of the opening goal went to Blueharts from a short corner. Hertford felt that the short corner should have never happened due to an earlier infringement, but that oversight was the beginning of a very long match of curious incidents. Hertford fell into old habits and quickly conceded further goals, the Blueharts forwards scoring through a reverse stick thunderbolt and close tap-in to take the score to 3-0. Hertford were still causing the opposition defence problems with pace and brought the competition back to life before half-time with Ben Cooper varying the call at a short corner to strike reverse stick into the backboard.

Half-time allowed Hertford to curtail their ill-discipline on the pitch and to improve on their chances in front of goal but Blueharts extended their lead from a short corner, the flick glancing off Jared Ford's left glove past Mike Hawes diving attempt on the line. Once again, the short corner came about from a contentious decision at the other end of the pitch, but whilst there was unrest in the Blueharts' defence, Hertford continued to cause problems up front. James Harris took advantage and dribbled through a crowd to win a short corner that was scored by a strong Joel Forrester flick. Further pressure on Blueharts lead to several decisions that Hertford felt aggrieved to have not been allowed. Cooper was unfortunate to have his reverse stick deflection disallowed (due to the fact it was outside the D) after it crossed the line due to the thought he was outside of the D, After this Hertford were denied a penalty stroke when a defender stopped the ball on the line with his leg. Despite many of the Hertford team accepting that the result was unlikely to change, red mist descended on Forrester who was dismissed for petulantly arguing with the umpire. Blueharts pounced on the advantage and increased their lead to 5-2 with a copy of their short corner opener.

Hertford host Harpenden on Saturday and will need to use more than their pace advantage to ensure they win the fight against relegation
