Hertford travelled to Upminster on Saturday full of optimism following a last minute draw at home to Bedford the previous week. In a competitive and tight league, Hertford knew the importance of this fixture with the Essex based opponents narrowly beneath the Stags in the league.
Hertford started brightly and took an early lead following a simple short corner routine with Will Harris deflecting a Ben Cooper pass in at the right post. Unfortunately, Hertford failed to build on this good start regularly conceding possession and this allowed Upminster to gain control of the half. The sides went in 1-1 at half time with Upminster drawing level following a short corner and a strike from the top of the D.
Hertford re-grouped at half time and demonstrated more passion and desire which was evidently lacking in the 1st half. Hertford quickly made it 3 – 1 thanks to goals from James Harris and Alec Short and with 12 minutes to go Hertford were in a great position to seal 3 points.
The game swung with Hertford looking to kill the game off and score a fourth. Possession was lost cheaply at the edge of the Upminster D and the home side countered to make it 3 – 2. Encouraged by vocal home support, momentum shifted to the home side and Hertford disappointingly conceded a further 3 goals in 10 minutes to make the final result 5 – 3 to Upminster.
A hard lesson for Hertford and the team must respond positively with an improved performance against West Herts 2s next Saturday.
