Hertford Men’s 1 secured a hard fought 4 – 2 victory against Wapping 2 on Saturday at the fantastic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Wapping started brightly and with Herford seeming overawed by the location, the home side took full advantage by scoring two early goals.
Wapping continued to apply the early pressure, moving the ball around quickly and were unlucky not to increase their lead.
Hertford forced their way back into the game following a quick break down the right resulting in a short corner. Joel Forrester took full advantage with an excellent drag flick finish in the top right corner to make it 2-1. A 2nd short corner moments later resulted in a similar outcome with the ever reliable Forrester making no mistake again. This ensured Hertford, somewhat fortuitously went in 2-2 at half time.
Hertford re-grouped at the interval and as confidence grew, momentum shifted with Hertford controlling more of the possession and the resilient defence stifling any Wapping attack.
Hertford deservedly took the lead with Wapping temporarily reduced to 10 men following the game’s 1st yellow card. Pressure resulted in another short corner with Hertford’s international veteran Gavin Elliott scoring with a strike from the top of the D. Hertford then quickly made it 4 – 2 following good work from the midfield, and the head band wearing Will Harris finished convincingly having picked up on a loose ball in Wapping’s area.
The game finished how it started with Wapping applying lots of pressure in Hertford’s half however the stag’s defence remained strong and ensured an excellent 4-2 win. Hertford now turn their attention to next Saturday and Essex based Witham.
