A good afternoon out in the sun

Hertford M6 made a big step up from the previous week and showed real purpose and promise for much of this game which was closely contested but played in the spirit a friendly should be. Despite the absence of 6 of our regular 2019-20 defenders a cobbled together back four, albeit orchestrated by with our septuagenarians in the two key central positions, held firm for much of the first half repelling some slick attacks before setting the Hertford midfield free feed out front three.

Hertford caused a number of there own chances in front of goal winning the first PC of the game only to have the attempt ruled out for an attacker entering the D too early. Adam Locker went close picking up a hard hit ball out of defence with a deft first touch to leave him one on one with keeper w just got a pad to the ball.

At the other end Elliot Mari (MoM) was having a great game in goal. The hosts won a PF after a follow up shot from a PC hit John Andrews on the line which was adjudged by the umpire to be body (although a replay may well have shown it to be the hand holding the stick). The umpires spent a minute of two in discussion with both Elliot and the striker waiting patiently. I may not have been the best PF taken but equally the ball went to a position Elliot may well least expected but none the less he got leg guard to ball to make a great save.

Hertford opened the scoring minutes later with Chris Dean driving into the box to beat the keeper with a cross across goal with Luke Godwin making no mistake with the tap in. Unfortunately, Waltham Forest produced an equally slick move two minutes later to finish the half 1:1.

Hertford played some good passing hockey in the second half. James Murray made a number of excellent tackles and showed some real promise as well as calmness at left midfield. Steve Barnes played tirelessly at the back of the diamond thwarting many an attack and distributing the ball well. However, a goal mouth scramble and a deflection of a shot into the bottom right corner out of Elliot's reach saw the hosts take the lead with 15 mins left. Hertford had two PCs in the last few minutes but were unable to convert despite the first strike narrowly missing the goal with keeper and defence beaten for what would have been an honourable draw.
