4th straight defeat, our worst ever start to the season.
With no natural strikers, a rather makeshift midfield and no real pace anywhere, all St Albans had to do was get the basics right and let their younger players run round us. Unlike last week, where Berkhamsted’s veterans left us more space and time, we rarely got a chance to impose ourselves. Led by Graham White, as usual we defended tenaciously, Andy handled almost everything they threw at us, Clive cleared on the goal line when he didn’t, we soaked up a short corner count of 10 – 2 (actually one of our better games then), but one goal mid way through the first half and one five minutes from time was all it look.
We only really looked threatening for the first ten minutes or so of each half, when we a managed to get a bit of control on our passing, opened up the flanks and got some crosses in, and as long as there was only a goal in it, our forwards made what they could of their scant possession with Chris Dean and Josh weaving through the middle, but most of the time we were left struggling for options and giving the ball away in speculative passes or desperate clearances.
However, heads stayed up, we all kept running up to the limits of our fitness, and of course several of us are still finding their way (back) into the game this season and will get sharper as the weeks go by, so I have every confidence that the tide will turn soon.
