6s run out of steam......

Game of two halves?

We had this nicely under control for about 33 minutes, with little real threat to our goal, and Matt White’s cannonball strike a fair reward for some good periods of pressure. Whilst not outstanding, we were making some tidy build-ups, mostly down the middle, but not getting shots in at the keeper.

Then a careless clearance led to S&S’s first short corner and a precision finish was unstoppable for Clive.

Our defence failed to settle after the break and within minutes we were a goal down and floundering. Aodhan, dropping back into midfield, worked hard to restore some control higher up the pitch and with 10 minutes gone dribbled through the heart of the defence, and fed Rian coming up fast on the right for our equaliser.

For a few minutes we looked hungry and pressed for another, Graham White going inches wide of the post on our best effort, but we were caught out on the break and some more disorganised defending left Clive exposed again. Sadly, we didn’t seem to find much heart or energy in the last quarter to turn things round. Adam Sutherland worked hard to restore some structure to our attacks, Andy Benson unleashed some long balls that went tantalisingly close to Hertford sticks behind their defence, but only close….

The substitution set up, which has run itself nicely in recent weeks, didn’t work well for the squad we had toady, and I will give some more thought to how we manage this. But the main problems was a general lack of energy against a robust opposition, our all too familiar failure to get passes away early, a disappointing lack of width for much of the game, and lack of confidence and precision in lateral and back passing. Oh, and then not marking one on one…..

No disgrace to lose against a good side (now in joint 2nd and the only unbeaten team in the division) but we could and should have had more from this.

Let’s do better next week

Geoff
