Ladies O35 Fall At Final Hurdle
As Early Goals See Wisbech Through
Hertford had the opportunity to make Vets history today by making it to a National final. However we had the challenge of Wisebech in the way to get there.
They definatly had the better start, with the sore legs form a tough Saturday and a two hour coach trip to recover from. We found ourselves 2-0 down after two very good short corner routines from the home team and a very pacey front line attack.
However being Hertford this did not break our spirit. Hertford had to dig deep and pick up their game. Some tight man on man marking was needed as they were slippery customers. The back line of Nicola Estherby, Teresa Bartram, Kirstie Craig Reddy and Lorraine Ellis needed to be on their toes as this was a nippy attacking line.
The home advantage was having an influence as there was a large crowd gathering who were becoming more and more vocal. The midline iron wall of Mel Evans, Helen Gilbert, Bevelyn Deagostina , Jules Hawkins and Basel Wilkins had to use all of their experience to tame the attack. Their ability to select decisions was amazing. I have never seen so many interceptions from Deagosina, perfectly timed tackles form Mel and Basel.
The home team were awarded a penalty flick after the ball was blocked on the line by a foot. Their centre back stepped up but Lianne Warnell was up to the challenge and held her form to make the save.
Hertford had the better of the final 10 minutes of the second half. Helen Owen, Sian Foster, Kim and Liz Berry were finally getting quality possession and putting the home team under pressure. They were able to work the keeper, but with no success.
Wisebech were determined to take control of the opening minutes of the second half. Hertford had to hold strong, but once again a flick was awarded after a difficult decision made by the umpire. Unfortunaltly the outcome was different this time, and the home team were 3-0 up.
Hertford were determined to put up a fight, and all of the play was in the home circle. The keeper was needed as a wave of attack from Foster, Deagostina, Hawkins and Owen put her under pressure.
Hertford enjoyed their journey, especially the coach home. We did you proud and there is always next year.
