Hertford Ladies Make National Semi Finals
As Sian Foster's Four Goals seal victory over Spencer
Hertford made the long journey south of the river for their quarter final match in the Vets competition. With only the bear 11 and sore bodies from the Saturday they were full of high spirits for the road trip.
The warm up complete, positions sorted, and team talk done. Now to put the plan into action on the pitch. The defensive line was well tested in the opening 10 minutes with Lianne Warnell being called into action early on as spencer crowded the defensive circle. But the experience of Teresa Bartram, Lorraine Ellis and Nicola Estherby were up to the task.
A series of short corners were awarded, with the Hertford defence holding strong. Spencer were pressing hard, but this was playing into our cunning plan. Hertford were using Jules Hawkins and Kim Hellery as an outlet down the right to release some pressure. This resulted in a series of short corners for Hertford, when the deadlock was broken on the third attempt. The initial strike was saved but a nippy follow up by Sian Foster saw the ball in the back of the net. The score remained the same for the remainder of the first half.
Spencer scored in the opening 5 minutes but we didn't panic. Mel Evans and Basil Wilkins were working well in the middle, linking well with Sheila Langley on the wing, feeding sian plenty of possession up front. The second goal came only a few minutes later, when Sheila Langley took on the world and found Sian Foster unmarked. She slotted it past the keeper.
Jules Hawkins suffered an injury to her hand and needed some treatment. This lead to Sian Foster making good a defensive tackle which being given a forward resulted in a short. Spencer were able to equalise again. Sheila Langley was having a great half with the support from the middle and Helen Gilbert. Spencer were pressing for another, but left Sian Foster alone who placed the ball passed the keeper for the third.
Spencer spirits were dropping as time was running out. The final goal was a simple straight strike of Sian Foster to seal the win. A brilliant team performance, all working for one else another and showing real quality under pressure.
Hertford have drawn Wisbech in the semi finals on the 12th March. A place in the final is on the horizon, but a big test first. Watch this space.......
