At the East Herts Council Community Sports Awards

The cream of local talent both on and off the sporting arena were on show at Hertford Theatre for East Herts Council's Community Sports Awards.

With national sporting success making the headlines including Andy Murray and Lewis Hamilton, East Herts' executive member for health and wellbeing, Cllr Eric Buckmaster, took the opportunity to urge everyone to take part and enjoy sport.

"Congratulations to all the nominees and recipients of awards, you have all done so well," said Cllr Buckmaster.

"I hope that you keep enjoying your sports, set your own targets, and as you go through life encourage your friends who might not be so energetic to get up and have a go.

"It may transform their lives."

The awards celebrate achievements and contributions to sport, as well as inspiring local sporting talent to go on and reach their full potential.

There were plenty of cheers as Cllr Peter Ruffles presented the Club of the Year award to Hertford Hockey Club.

The club has grown into one of the biggest clubs in East Herts with 11 adult teams – six men's and five ladies – as well as a strong youth section from U8s to U16s, and special needs hockey for anyone with disabilities or learning difficulties.

Announcing the award winners, Jan Wood, head of the North East Herts School Sports Partnership, said: "The work they do in our community is quite fantastic and brings people together."

Hertford Hockey Club also featured in the Sporting Achievement of the Year award, where the ladies fifth team, set up by Julie Hawkins, were highly commended.

Others members and teams in the club featured.
