5. Coaches Resources


In2Hockey Delivery Cards

England Hockey have developed a core set of resources plus two accompanying bolt on sets to assist with the delivery of the game.

The core resource comprises of a teacher and coaches resource booklet including three sets of session plans and a series of 51 delivery cards. Two additional bolt-on resources are also available to support the introduction of goalkeepers, and to help with the development of In2Hockey umpires.

The In2Hockey resources have been carefully designed so that they:

  • Provide clear, concise information on organising and managing activities which can be used with a variety of young players, keeping them all engaged and involved
  • Offer a variety of linked and progressive activities for developing and applying the basic skills of In2Hockey
  • Are colour coded using a traffic light system to help coaches and teachers identify activities which are at an appropriate level for the group that they are working with
  • Include challenges that can be set up quickly and easily, and which are designed to encourage young players to make decisions and gain a greater understanding of the tactical aspects of playing invasion games
  • Aid progression from the FUNdamentals phase, through the Learning to Train and the Training to Train phases of the Long Term Athlete Development Model

Provide useful advice to teachers and coaches on:

  • Safety
  • Adapting games and differentiation
  • Equipment
  • Core teaching points
  • How to access more advanced coaching information

Provide additional supporting information to assist with the introduction of goalkeepers, and understanding and implementing the rules and developing umpiring skills
Can be delivered by a teacher, a coach or a young person under supervision

Core Resource
The core resource comprises of a teacher and coaches resource book and a series of delivery cards.

The teacher and coaches resource booklet is an 88 page booklet comprising of 7 sections:

  • Purpose, guidelines and rules
  • In2Hockey equipment
  • In2Hockey resources
  • Delivery training options
  • Session plans
  • National curriculum strands
  • Supplementary information

The session plans in the teacher and coaches resource booklet provide six-week development plans for each age group. Each age group has a specific focus:

  • Year 7/U12: Developing 1v1 skills (individual ball carrying)
  • Year 8/U13: Playing 2v1
  • Year 9/U14: Making good decisions

Delivery Cards

The core resource also includes a series of 48 In2Hockey delivery cards. These delivery cards are designed to be easy to use, and assist teachers, coaches and young people with delivery. All of the cards are based around challenges, and there are three different types:

  • 4x introductory cards
  • 31x skill cards
  • 10x small-sided game (SSG) cards
  • 3x penalty corner (PC) cards
Delivery cards are also colour coded using a traffic light system to help coaches and teachers select cards that are appropriate to the group that they are working with.

Some cards will be suitable for two or more levels of ability as they may include basic skills which can be made easier or harder using the STEP framework.

All of the In2Hockey delivery cards follow a similar format to the Quicksticks challenge cards. The front of the card includes:

  • A clear illustration of the challenge
  • An indication as to the level of difficulty
  • A concise explanation of how to play, including any additional rules and how to score the challenge
  • A list of the equipment required
  • The back of the card includes:
  • Teaching points
  • Key points to remember during the challenge
  • How to adapt the challenge to be easier or harder (using the STEP framework)
